SuRie’s Album Launch party

I was lucky enough to be invited to SuRie’s intimate album launch party at Fiction Studios. The cosy and cute venue hidden away in the busy city of London created a perfect backdrop for this event. Surrounded by books, we were swept away by SuRie’s enchanting vocals as she took us through her latest album, Building A Woman, from start to finish.

You may recognise SuRie from her time on Eurovision in 2018, where she represented the U.K. and captured the hearts of millions of viewers; she explained the album was two years in the making and it expressed a lot of feelings about growth, loss and love during that time.

Dressed in a dreamy red dress, SuRie floated to her keyboard where she sat barefoot and comfortable and thanked everyone for joining her.

Beginning with “Nostalgia”, SuRie told us that she loved the etymology of the word and so wrote a song about it - why not! With moody vocals contrasting bold instruments, the song quickly drew the audience in.

The room was silent as she performed, everyone caught up in the magic of the music. The audience laughed - especially when she confessed her song “Next Slide, Please” was inspired by none other than Dr. Chris Whitty who didn’t have a clicker during the COVID conferences and had to keep asking someone to change the slide!). The audience cried - especially when SuRie pulled out all the stops for the hauntingly beautiful ballad “If I Knew (All The Things I Know Now)”. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room during this song about a loss in SuRie’s life; the song describing how she learnt more about the subject after they passed away and was left with unanswered questions.

Though it was hard to pick a favourite track from her masterpiece of an album, I did love “The Right Yellow”, a song about picking the right shade of yellow for your kitchen - it gives Disney vibes and the audience laughed when SuRie explained the simplicity of wanting such a menial but beautiful thing in her life.

Finishing with an a capella rendition of “Epilogue”, SuRie’s powerful vocals had me itching to go and stream the album immediately so we could relive the event all over again!

So there you have it, our intimate evening with SuRie. Her album Building A Woman is out now, you can listen to it here.
