A Q&A With April Jai

I got to catch up with viral singer/songwriter April Jai prior to her latest release; “Morally Grey” ft. Nation Haven.

Since I last spoke to April Jai, she’s accumulated her first 2 million streams on “Morally Grey”, a track that blew up in BookTok. Now she’s back and re-releasing it as a collab that will have you listening to it on repeat.

Juniper: You just released your first collab on your viral sensation “Morally Grey” - huge congrats! It’s an absolute tune! Can you tell me what inspired the song?

April Jai: Thank you so much! The song is inspired by the books I read and my love for fictional morally grey men. I might not condone those actions in real life, but in the fictional world it’s hot!

J: I sussed out that this song was a hit on TikTok, how has that changed the game for you so far?

AJ: Honestly my entire life is changing right now, it’s definitely gotten a lot of eyes on me, and it’s created a lot of buzz which is amazing. At the end of the day I’m super proud of the song, and I’m just really happy the fans are connecting with it.

J: How did the collab with Nation Haven come about and what was the process like considering the two of you are countries apart?

AJ: I put up a little open verse challenge over on TikTok and he hopped on it! His version ended up going viral, and I loved what he did with the track. Pretty quickly after he uploaded it I got in touch with him to see if he’d be up for an official collab. We went back and forth with a few different versions of additional parts and landed on this version. It all went super smoothly honestly.

J: If you could pick one artist, dead or alive to perform “Morally Grey” with you at a show, who would you choose?

AJ: I’d definitely love to perform this version with Nate himself some day!

J: If you could open for one artist on their world tour, who would it be and why?

AJ: There are SO many. Right now though I’d absolutely love to open for Upsahl

J: What book or series would you love to see “Morally Grey” featured in?

AJ: I’m seeing a lot of people add it to their Fourth Wing playlists and the fans keep telling me it’s perfect for that book, and I also know they’re making that series into a tv show so that would be super cool!

J: What’s your ideal festival line-up?

AJ: Definitely an all-female one! I literally listen to 90% female artists and I also think we don’t see enough representation in festival line ups.

J: Who’s your favourite “Morally Grey” character from either a book or movie/ TV show?

AJ: I have a love/hate relationship with Kova from Lucia Franco’s Off Balance series.

J: 2023 seems like it was a big success for your growth as an artist, what do you hope for in 2024?

AJ: It’s definitely been an incredible year, especially these past few months! More music is coming and also more shows but I’d love to go on tour with someone as an opener next year. I’m also excited to expand my team.

J: And lastly, in the spirit of Christmas, what’s your go-to Christmas song?

AJ: “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is my favourite classic but I’ve been loving Sabrina Carpenter’s “Fruitcake” EP. I also love Katy Perry’s “Cozy Little Christmas”.

April Jai is definitely one to watch for 2024! I’m excited to see what she does next. You can stream “Morally Grey” ft. Nation Haven on all platforms now.
