Fender's Newest Talent: Deyaz & Ruti

Chances are that when you picture a guitar in your head, its design will take influence from a Fender and their sleek silhouettes that ooze timeless class and quality. So, I felt particularly lucky that I was invited to attend the Fender Next 2023 Showcase to highlight young talents Deyaz and Ruti.

The Fender Next programme has supported prestigious alumni such as Wet Leg, Fontaines DC, IDLES, 100 Gecs, Orville Peck, Beabadoobee, and Arlo Parks just to name a few!

Upon arrival, floor-to-ceiling guitars glittered the walls in glossy bursts of sea foam, teal, hot pink and jet black. I could hardly believe my luck. After a quick introduction from our hosts, the crowd settled in for the first act of the night.

First off, we were treated to a soft acoustic set by Deyaz. The multi-instrumentalist hailing from East Ham, London professed to feeling jitters as he began his performance.

Though, as he started singing he decided to do away with the microphone entirely; the restless audience was given no choice but to listen closely. The close vocal whispers and bitter-sweet melodies of his latest single ‘I’ll Scream (All The Words)’  put the crowd in a state of quiet introspection.

Next up, Ruti took centre stage. As she began to sing, I was sent back to the heady days of 2006 when Corrine Bailey Ray introduced ‘Put your Records On’ to the world. You’ll see what I mean if you check out her single ‘Closer to you’, jam packed with all sorts of luvvy duvvy sensations.

Summery and joyful, Ruti wore a smile throughout her set and had no trouble in encouraging all else to sing along.

A big thanks go out to those at Fender who had us along - with artists, snacks, drinks, and music, what more could you need?
