Lemon Boy - A Zesty Twist
Cavetown is the stage name of singer-songwriter Robin (Robbie) Skinner from England. Cavetown has been receiving more and more attention from the masses on YouTube releasing covers and his originals. His US tour starts on June 20th of this year and the nearest concert near Chicago is Milwaukee at Collectivo Coffee. Exciting stuff to come!
Now onto the song “Lemon Boy”, which also happens to be one of Cavetown’s album titles and its fruitful yield. The whole song brings you into a world filled with a commonality among people but you do have to dig a little for the meaning and purpose.
With sweet vocals, you are launched into a story about a man named Lemon Boy and how the singer, Robbie, joins this citrus friend. However, as the song states, this “bittersweet man” happens to come back like a weed, time and time again. If you haven’t guessed yet, Lemon Boy represents depression. “Soon his bittersweet started to rub off on me” is the lyric that struck a chord with me. But don’t worry, the song’s not over. Instead of Robbie saying how he conquered or got rid of Lemon Boy, he states, “So Lemon Boy and me, we just gotta get along together”. Showing the reality of depression, which is less about conquering and more about compromising; depression doesn’t need to define the person who has it. The song then builds into a crescendo stating, “Lemon Boy and I, were gonna live forever” proving that the thoughts that depression brings will not get the best of Robbie.
“Lemon Boy” shows a sweet execution but rather true expression of depression with a carefully placed “Lemon Boy” as the symbol for this song. The album continues with clever themes throughout that everyone can relate to. So, enjoy “Lemon Boy” and its juicy extracts.
